First, some beauty. Sarah and Bryn.
Who may or may not agree with the following.
It’s been too long since I’ve ranted or cheered about birth in America so let’s do both.*
Anytime a video floats by that I think might encourage ANYONE to check out all their options I’ll post it here.
Especially if you’re carrying multiples! God bless you!!
Now, as most of you know, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology is the professional organization of obstetricians. They recently came out with a policy statement against homebirthing. The following exerpts from the statement are frighteningly condescending, and yet characteristic of what obstetrics thinks of birthing women:
“Childbirth decisions should not be dictated or influenced by what’s fashionable, trendy, or the latest cause célèbre.”
“Choosing to deliver a baby at home, however, is to place the process of giving birth over the goal of having a healthy baby.”
These statements appear to be in response to the recent popularity of the move “The Business of Being Born”
My favorite quote from the clip
“Basically what the medical profession has done is convince the vast majority of women that they don’t know how to birth.”
*Politically correct note: Let’s be clear. My birth rants are not meant as a judgment against those of you that have chosen to give birth in what are statistically the most unsafe conditions for you and your baby: in a nasty-air filled hospital room, on your back, with drugs pumping through both of you. Or worse yet, you in a hospital having your child unnecessarily cut out of you. I’m pissed off for you. My issue is with the obstetrical community that has chosen money over your safety, and that has chosen not to inform you of all the risks that you face by placing yourself in their “care”.
**I have decided it would be right to make the comments for this post private. If anyone cares to read the debate, the rights have been sold to be made into a Lifetime movie, no doubt starring Meredith Baxter Berney**
